Travel insurance for Vietnam: what the policy should include

Motorbikes, typhoons, travel between regions and treatment: which insurance terms to check before you go to Vietnam.

Vietnam is long and narrow, and a trip often takes in several regions, domestic flights and motorbikes. That shapes what to look for in a policy: insurance is not a formality but protection for situations that really do happen there.

Medical costs and evacuation

Check the treatment limit and how payment works. Big cities have international-standard clinics, but the further you are from them the harder it is to get help, and sometimes you need transport to another city or country. Make sure the policy includes evacuation and that the insurer has a 24-hour line in a language you understand.

Motorbikes and weather

Motorbikes are an everyday way to get around in Vietnam, but insurers normally require a valid licence for the right category, and without it a refusal is almost certain. If you plan to visit the central coast in autumn, remember typhoon season: check what the policy covers if a flight or trip is cancelled because of weather, and do not expect compensation if you bought it after a storm was announced.

Before you pay

Check the dates, exclusions for chronic conditions, the deductible and the list of covered activities. This is general information, not a recommendation of a company. Below is a partner insurance card (advertising): compare terms, not only price.
