Why is the rate different at the exchange desk?
A reference rate is an average market guide. An exchange desk earns on the gap between its buy and sell price, so its rate is always worse — usually by 1–2%, and considerably more at airports and hotels.
How often are these rates updated?
Once a day, from an open source of reference market rates. This is not the central bank's official rate: for settling with a bank, check the central bank's and your bank's own rate.
Can I plan a large transfer at this rate?
As a guide, yes. Always confirm the exact figure with your bank or transfer service: they apply their own fee and their own rate, and on a large sum the difference is noticeable.
