What a trip to Turkey costs and how to handle the lira

Why prices in lira change quickly, where to exchange cash, how to decline paying "in your own currency" and what all-inclusive leaves out.

The Turkish lira has been losing value noticeably against the dollar and euro, so prices in lira change quickly, and many tourist services (excursions, transfers, yacht hire) are quoted in euros or dollars in advance. Any "average costs" go stale within months: it is more reliable to calculate yourself and convert the total into your own currency in our converter at a current rate.

What goes into the budget

In an all-inclusive hotel, food and drinks are mostly paid for, but excursions, transfers, the spa, drinks outside the list and taxis are not. For an independent trip, split costs into accommodation, food, transport between cities, excursions, connectivity and a reserve. Add a margin for bargaining and random spending at markets.

Where to exchange cash

The rate at the airport and in a hotel is usually worse than at licensed exchange offices in town. Compare two or three and judge by the amount you actually get in hand, not the board. Do not agree to exchange money with people on the street.

Cards and ATMs

You can pay by card almost everywhere in Turkey, but if a terminal offers to charge "in your own currency", choose lira: the terminal's conversion is usually worse than your bank's rate. At ATMs check the fee and the limit: many small withdrawals cost more. In big cities local transport cards are convenient. Before you go, ask your bank whether your card works abroad.
