Travel insurance for Thailand in 2026: what treatment costs and how to choose a policy

Private clinic prices in baht, what coverage limit you need, why insurers refuse claims after a scooter accident, and what to do if you fall ill on your trip.

For an ordinary tourist trip to Thailand, insurance is not required at entry: as of September 2026 there is no mandatory policy for tourists, although Thailand's Ministry of Public Health proposed introducing one in spring 2026. But the absence of a requirement does not mean a policy is unnecessary. Tourists in Thailand most often end up at the doctor not because of exotic diseases but because of ordinary things: food poisoning, dengue, scooter falls, ear infections after swimming in the sea. And the private clinics that treat foreigners issue bills comparable to European ones.

How much treatment costs at a private clinic

Below are approximate prices at Thai private hospitals for foreigners in 2026. These are orders of magnitude, not a price list: the final bill is set by the specific clinic.

ItemBahtApprox. in dollars
General practitioner visit800–2,50023–72
Emergency room visit with minor care5,000–15,000145–430

CT scan5,000–15,000145–430
Hospital room, per day5,000–12,000145–345
Intensive care, per day25,000–80,000715–2,300
Dengue with 3–7 days in hospital100,000–500,0002,900–14,300
Appendectomy80,000–150,0002,300–4,300
Fracture after a scooter accident, with surgery80,000–300,0002,300–8,600
Medical evacuationcalculated individuallycan cost tens of thousands of dollars

Even a simple scrape after a scooter fall, with cleaning and stitches, can cost 10,000–50,000 baht. An accident with several injuries and intensive care can cost hundreds of thousands.

Which coverage limit to choose

The limit is the maximum amount the insurer will pay for treatment. For Thailand it makes sense to look at policies with medical coverage from 50,000 dollars, and for long trips, active holidays and older travelers, from 100,000. The coverage should include medical evacuation and repatriation: these are the largest expenses.

Also check whether the insurer works with hospitals directly. Private clinics often ask for a guarantee letter from the insurer or a deposit before starting serious treatment. If the insurer pays the clinic itself, you won't have to pay the bill out of pocket and then wait for reimbursement.

Scooter and motorcycle: the main reason for refusals

Renting a scooter is the most common cause of both injuries and denied claims. Insurers, as a rule, pay for a scooter accident only if three conditions are met at once:

  • the driver has a license with a motorcycle category (in Russia and Kazakhstan this is category A; for small scooters A1 or M is sometimes enough, so check the policy terms);
  • the driver and passenger were wearing helmets;
  • the driver was sober.

Some policies have additional restrictions, for example on engine size. If you plan to ride a scooter, look for this directly in the insurance rules, not in the promotional description. If you don't have a license of the required category, it is more honest to skip the scooter and use Grab: that is cheaper than paying for a fracture yourself.

Diving, Muay Thai and other activities

Diving is usually covered down to a certain depth and with a certification, but not in all policies. Muay Thai training, rock climbing, jungle trekking and rafting are often on the exclusion list or require a separate option. If you are traveling for an active holiday, choose a policy with the appropriate package: it costs more, but it is cheaper than any clinic bill.

How much a policy costs

The price depends on trip length, limit, set of options and especially age. For international policies in 2026 the following benchmarks are typical:

OptionApproximate price
Policy for 2 weeks40–120 dollars
Subscription for long tripsabout 1.5–2.5 dollars per day
Annual multi-trip policy150–350 dollars per year

With age the price can rise two to three times, and after a certain age some companies do not sell a policy at all. Russian insurers sell policies for trips to Thailand through aggregators, where you can compare prices and terms in a few minutes.

Checklist before buying

  • Medical limit from 50,000 dollars; for active holidays and older age, from 100,000.
  • Evacuation and repatriation are included in the coverage.
  • Scooter or motorcycle is covered, and you meet the conditions (license, helmet, sobriety).
  • The activities you need (diving, trekking) are not on the exclusion list.
  • The deductible is clear: the amount you pay yourself in each insured event.
  • The policy is valid from the day of departure through the day of return inclusive.
  • Chronic conditions: if you have any, check that flare-ups are covered.
  • There is a 24-hour assistance line with Russian-speaking operators.

What to do if you fall ill or have an accident

First, call the insurer's service line (the number is in the policy): it will recommend a clinic and, if needed, send a payment guarantee. If you go to the hospital first and agree to expensive treatment without calling, the insurer may not reimburse part of the costs. Keep all receipts, discharge papers and doctors' reports. In case of an accident or theft, get a police report: without it the insurer usually does not pay.

Emergency numbers in Thailand: 1669 for the ambulance, 1155 for the tourist police (English-speaking), 191 for the police.

Frequently asked questions

Is insurance required to enter Thailand?

For tourists entering without a visa, insurance is not mandatory as of September 2026. Thailand has discussed a mandatory policy for tourists, so check the current rules before your trip. For some long-term visas, insurance with a certain limit is mandatory.

Do citizens of Uzbekistan need insurance for the visa?

From September 15, 2026, citizens of Uzbekistan need a visa for Thailand. The list of documents for a tourist visa published by Kun.uz does not mention insurance, but requirements may change, so check them in the Thai e-Visa system before applying. In any case, buy a trip policy: treatment in Thailand is expensive.

Does insurance cover a scooter accident?

Only if this is explicitly stated in the policy and you met the conditions: a license of the right category, a helmet, sobriety. Without a license insurers almost always refuse.

What is a deductible?

It is the part of the costs that you pay yourself in each insured event. For example, with a 100-dollar deductible and a 1,000-dollar bill, the insurer pays 900. A policy without a deductible costs more, but it is more reassuring on a trip.

Can I buy insurance if I'm already in Thailand?

Some companies sell policies to travelers who are already abroad, but often with a waiting period: events in the first days after purchase are not covered. It is more reliable to arrange a policy before departure.
