Travel insurance for Georgia: mountains, skiing and roads

Trekking in Svaneti and Kazbegi, Gudauri and Bakuriani, mountain serpentines and private clinics: what to check in the policy.

People choose Georgia for the mountains, the wine and the cities, and a trip often combines Tbilisi, Batumi and high-mountain areas. The mountains determine what to look at in a policy: injuries on hikes and while skiing are the most expensive and most frequent reason for claims, and in remote areas help is far away and evacuation is sometimes needed.

Mountains, trekking and skiing

Most policies do not cover trekking at altitude, skiing and snowboarding without a separate option. Check up to what altitude the cover applies, whether helicopter or ambulance evacuation is included and, in winter, off-piste riding. For hikes in Svaneti or Kazbegi take insurance with exactly this option.

Roads and transport

Mountain roads with serpentines and the minibuses on them demand attention, and renting a car or scooter needs a suitable licence. Insurers refuse if the driver had no licence for the right category. Check the terms before renting.

Healthcare and what else to check

Tbilisi and Batumi have private clinics, options are more modest in the countryside, and stray dogs are a reason to check whether the policy covers treatment after a bite. Check dates, the deductible and exclusions for chronic conditions. This is general information, not a recommendation of a company.
