Getting to Bali: direct flights, connections and season

Which airport serves Bali, when tickets cost more and how to weigh a connection through other Asian cities.

Bali is served by Ngurah Rai airport (DPS) near Denpasar. There are no direct flights from many countries, so most people fly with one connection through a big Asian hub such as Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Bangkok or Istanbul, depending on your departure city.

Season and prices

Tickets and accommodation cost noticeably more in the peak season, which coincides with the dry period and holidays. If your dates are flexible, shifting by a week or two sometimes cuts the price noticeably, and the low-price calendar in a search shows it at once.

Choosing a connection

Compare not only price but also the length of the connection, an overnight stay at the airport and whether you need a transit visa. A very short connection is risky, especially if your baggage is checked separately, and a very long one is tiring. If the legs are bought separately and the first is late, you cannot claim from the second airline, so allow a margin or buy a single ticket.
